When it comes to dry bags, one of the top questions we get asked is how to close a dry bag correctly? The main reason this is a popular question is because people are concerned that they will not close the bag correctly and therefore their equipment will not be kept dry and will not be safe.
Closing a dry bag correctly isn’t difficult and therefore it is easy to get the hang of it with just a little practice. So we thought we would put together a few waterproof dry bag tips to help you master the right technique.
If you have shopped around then you will know that there are quite a few different types of waterproof dry bags available. The one thing they have in common is that they all use the same method for closing them and achieving a water tight seal. Today we are using a barrel dry bag for our demonstration.

How to Close a Dry Bag – Step 1
Not surprisingly, the first step is placing all of your items in the bag. You should fill the bag to three quarters full at the most. This is because you need some space left to be able to roll part of the bag down. Then you need to push the excess air out of the dry bag – if you don’t do this then you won’t be able to fold the bag down.
How to Close a Dry Bag – Step 2
Push the plastic strips together to create the initial seal. Fold the plastic strips down at least 3 times to create the waterproof seal. You can fold it down more times, especially if your dry bag is not full. Making sure that you fold the rather than roll the plastic strips.
How to Close a Dry Bag – Step 3
Grab both of the buckles, pull them towards each other and slot the buckles together. There are different buckle closing options on some bags, for example some dry bags have buckles at the top and bottom of the bag. With these, you simply pull them from top and bottom and fasten them.
How to Close a Dry Bag – Step 4
Many of the current dry bags will also have carry straps, simply connect these in the appropriate location and you are good to go.
