Outdoor Water Sports Equipment
How Do You Find the Best Outdoor Water Sports Equipment at the Best Price?
We have been involved in most outdoor water sports at one time or another over the past few decades and you could say that this has given us a good insight into what makes the best water sport equipment and what makes the best water sport accessories.
The list of watersport activities is almost endless with new sports being added virtually every year. What seems like a fringe sport now will most likely find its way into the mainstream over the coming years, just like many of today’s mainstream activities did. Here are some of the most popular outdoor water sport activities in the world today:-
Stand Up Paddle Boarding (or SUP as it’s often called)
Many of these activities actually have sub categories but maybe that is something we can tackle at another time. As you can see, that’s quite a list already and that is just what I could reel off in a couple of minutes.
Therefore it seems like the list of manufacturers, suppliers and brands is even more endless. This makes choosing the right water sport gear a harder task than it should be. When I say choosing the right gear what I mean by that is that, once you have identified which equipment you need, you need to find out who makes the best ones, where you can get them and how much you will have to pay for it.
Identifying what you need can be broken up into categories, well that’s how we do it anyways. The first category is what is necessary and the second category is what is nice to have.
Necessary equipment seems pretty straight forward to most people. If you are going to be paddle boarding then you will need a SUP board and a paddle (see, I told you it was straight forward). Nothing else which is necessary right? Well, one particular piece of watersports equipment which we always see as necessary is a life jacket. Being safe on the water is not a nice to have, it’s a necessity. Sure you can buy a SUP board and paddle and be on your way but without a life jacket you are putting yourself, and possibly others, in danger. I won’t labor the point here as we have already covered this topic (you can read it here).
Nice to have’s are more about the things which make your activity a bit easier or a bit more enjoyable. Waterproof dry bags for keeping things dry, such as cell phones and cameras or even your clothes. You get the idea, things which you don’t need but you will probably end up buying at some point anyway.
Now, where is the best place to buy water sports equipment? It usually boils down to two places to get your water sport gear from, in your local store or online. The upside of buying at your local store is that they will have good knowledge of the products they sell. Downsides of local stores is that they will only recommend what they have in stock.
Buying water sports equipment online will give you access to a much bigger selection and usually you can get it at much better price. One of the other benefits of buying online, and we think this is a big benefit, is that you get access to customer reviews. Real people using the gear you want to buy and letting you know how it performs, whether it is as good as the manufacturer says it is and whether you are getting good value for your money.
Water Sport Accessories
Which water sport accessories are available for which activity and which one do you need?
As you can see from the above list of activities, there are so many activities to choose from and along with that choice there are also a wide range of water sport accessories to go with them. First of all let’s look at what constitutes an accessory.
Watersports accessories are items which you don’t necessarily need to take part in the actual sport. For example, you can go surfing as long as you have a surf board but having a surf leash is an accessory which will make your time surfing easier and more enjoyable. Sure you don’t absolutely need one but you’d be crazy not to use one as it stops your surf board floating away from you when you fall off (and you will fall off).
Some watersports accessories are for specific sports but some are used for quite a wide range of sports. Staying with the leash example, as there are quite a few water board sports then a leash is an accessory which can be used in all of the different sports. This is handy if you are participating in more than one of the water board sports as you buy one accessory and use it across different activities.
Other water sports accessories are common across pretty much everything you do on the water. Life vests, waterproof dry bags and storage racks & equipment are a few of those.
How do you choose your watersports accessories? The way we look at it is that anything you buy needs to enhance your enjoyment, make it easier to do or add value in some other way. This can be something simple like a water bottle which will mean you’ve got fresh water when you want it, you keep yourself hydrated and you will therefore continue enjoying more time on the water.
It’s easy to get carried away and buy the newest shiny object that seems to be the new must have item of the season but it won’t necessarily add anything to what you are doing. That being said, the majority of water sport accessories will actually add value to what you do. As with most things you are thinking about buying, just do your research by reading customer reviews and ratings to make sure the manufacturers deliver on their promises. Then you will now you are buying the best watersports accessories.
